At the centre of the diplomatic flare up with France over their cancelled contract to build us a new fleet of submarines was the French view that they had been taken by surprise, and that Australia had given no warning the project was in jeopardy. Now new emails revealed through Freedom of Information laws shed new light on what Defence officials were saying about the project in the weeks right before it was shut down.
