University of Melbourne’s Michael Wesley says the “long game” for Australia is to ensure the South Pacific doesn’t become militarised by anyone.
“The situation in Solomons shouldn’t really be overblown; I think that starting to talk up the possibility of a Chinese base there, based on the language that’s in that document, I think is probably overblowing the situation a little bit too much,” Mr Wesley told Sky News Australia.
“What the Solomon Islands-China deal is discussing is something equivalent to the deal that Australia has or the security agreement that Australia has in the event of civil discord, China is able to send troops and police into Solomon Islands.”
